Burning At Stomach Region Radiating To Chest, Slight Indigestion After Eating, Eases With TUMS. Cause?

OK, I have had this condition for upwards of a year now. Sounds crazy but it really doesn t appear other than when I sit down to eat. Spicy, salty, or acidic foods are the worst. Neutral foods such as milk, bread, vegetables don t cause the problem. The burning initiates at the stomach region and then radiates through the chest for about the time it takes the food to enter the stomach. After the meal I may or may not experience slight indigestion which can be stopped by a single Tums tablet. Not suffering any weight loss , have good appetite and energy levels. I am 67 years old and in good health. I work out three times a week and the gym and power walk 6 to 7 days a week.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your symptoms can be caused by GERD, peptic ulcer, Helicabacter Pylori infection. In some cases such symptoms can also appear due to stomach cancer. And as the chest pain is present, heart condition always can be a reason.
That is why you should have heart ECG, abdominal ultrasound, full blood work and upper GI endoscopy with Helicobacter Pylori test.
You should also avoid fatty foods, spicy foods, coffee, soft drinks. Drink more mineral water.

Hope this will help.
Regards

General & Family Physician Dr. Polash Sannigrahi's  Response
Hello dear...
The symptoms as mentioned by you suggest that you might be having Gastritis..
The burning sensation in the stomach is due to increased production of acid in the stomach...which damages the mucosal lining of stomach resulting in ulcers.
Medical management consist of taking Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach)
Also eat a soft, plain diet & avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Try to sleep on the left side, or with your upper body raised.
If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist.
There is no need to worry...you will be fine.
Wish you a good health & speedy recovery.
Thanks & Take care.
