Burning Pain All Over Abdomen, Blood In Stool, Always Either Constipated Or Diarrhea. Blood, CT Normal. Thoughts ?

hi - 30 y/o female with visible blood in stool . Always either constipated or diarrhea . Sometimes severe burning pain all over abdomen. Negative abdominal CT scan (only a few scattered diverticular - no diverticulosis ). Blood work is normal. My PCP refuses to give me referral to GI - attributes problems to stress. Thoughts?

Hello ramirezv22,
I can understand your frustration. Canada having a national health system,
has had it's share of problems. Long delays in getting certain tests done and
also getting quick referrals to specialists .I can't blame the physicians but the
system. Be that as it may, now about your specific problem of fresh blood
in the stool and intermittent diarrhea and costipation. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
is not associated with bloody stools. However if there is considerable constipation
straining at stool can irritate small hemorrhoids or cause a fissure or a crack
that could bleed. If you have diverticulosis but not an inflammation such
as diverticulitis , you should make sure your diet is a high fiber diet. You can
take Metamucil oe Effersyllium powder supplement , about two teaspoons daily
mixed with 6-8 oz, of liquid. I am glad that all your blood tests were normal.
I hope you have no problem with milk, cheese or other dairy products.
Also, make sure you are tested for Celiac disease. It is missed by a lot of
doctors since the symptoms could be so much variable.
Local warm sitz baths and use of over the counter hemorrhoid creams are
helpful. Hopefully, you will get a referral to see a GI specialist soon.
Wish you good health.
