CT Scan Report Of Child With Microcephaly Shows Closure Of Anterior And Posterior Fontanelles Noted, Craniosynostosis Suggested. What Is It?
I hope this email finds you in good health and spirit. My baby boy was born on 21/10/2011. When he was 9 months, he was diagnosed as Micro-cephaly Case and the head size was 42.5 and anterior fontanel almost closed. The last measurement of head size was 45 after 6 months of first diagnosis. Recently, we made a new CT scan for his brain and the result was : Sagittal and the lambdoid sutures are about 1mm in maximum depth suggestive of the narrowing of the sutures. Closure of the anterior and posterior fontanelles are also noted which early for the age of the baby. Normal morphology of the brain. Impression: Craniosynostosis .
Hi ,
Thank you for your query.
Craniosynostosis is a birth defect that causes one or more sutures on a baby's head to close earlier than normal.
The skull of an infant or young child is made up of bony plates that allow for growth of the skull. The borders at which these plates intersect are called sutures or suture lines.
The sutures between these bony plates normally close by the time the child is 2 or 3 years old.
Early closing of a suture causes the baby to have an abnormally shaped head.
Prognosis depends upon the number of sutures involved and the overall development and neurological condition of the child.
Remedy is neurosurgery.
Kindly get into touch of a neursurgeon and pediatric neurologist.

Hello
You have not mentioned whether you baby was delivered at full term or born prematurely.
According to WHO chart head circumference of 42.6cm at 9 months comes under microcephaly. So its just borderline. Now at the age of 15 months head circumference should be less than 44.3 cm to label it as microcephaly and in your case its 45 cm.
Craniosynostosis is premature closure of fontanelle.
Posterior fontanelle closes at age of 6 weeks and anterior from 9-18 months. So this also is not grossly out of range. Brain parenchyma and morphology is also normal.
So I would suggest you to consult a pediatrician for proper developmental and neurological assessment. Also to rule out the other possible causes of craniosynostosis by laboratory evaluation.
