Can Adderal Be Taken For ADHD When Suffering From Bicuspid Aortic Valve?
My son was diagnosed with ADHD in elementary school. He took Adderall for a few years and then weaned off it as we moved him to a school with smaller class size, personal tutors etc. He did well in High School and is now a college student and is having trouble. His freshman year was hard but now as he progresses into harder upperclass subjects he is struggling. He would like to consider a return trial to medication. However at age 17 they found out he had a bicuspid aortic valve that is causing him no trouble. He has a echo every 2 years and there has been no change in its normal functioning. Is he restricted from taking a stimulant like Adderal?
In terms of safety of adderall, in the context of bicuspid aortic valve I would not be too concerned about safety issues.
Nevertheless, the drug does have the property to increase heart rate, so I would continue to monitor the pulse rate periodically to ensure it within permissible limits.
I am also concerned about the addiction potential of adderall at this age and it really requires that he gets adequate care from the psychiatric centre on this issue.
Hope I answered your queries.
Cheers.
