Can Alprazolam Be Taken While On Lithium And Concerta?

Hi, I take lithium at 600 mg and concerta at 19 mg every day. Is it ok for me to take alprazolam (.5) if I feel the need? I am feeling very anxious and have used my other techniques but they are not working right now. I have not taken alprazolam for 5 weeks since I started lithium for bipolar disorder.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Alprazolam is not contraindicated when taking lithium and concerta but please keep in mind that combining central nervous system depressants may cause more side effects than those of each individual drug. It is a low dose and normally, we wouldn't expect much trouble with it. You can only find out by trying though as individual predictions cannot be done. A general principle you should always keep in mind is that you'd better ask your doctor for advice regarding your treatment as your doctor knows you better than anybody else and is more familiar with your history than any other doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
