I am going for a CT scan tomorrow for a possible ovarian cyst after a hysterectomy in 1995. I am fifty-four and am experiencing extreme pain. My body temperature is usually 97.4.-97.8. My temperature is 99.6 now. I am worried it might be a cancerous tumor will the CT be able to tell that?
Hi, Welcome to Healthcare Magic. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
Ultrasound and MRI are more valuable in the evaluation of ovarian mass. Did you have an ultrasound done? Was the cyst a ultrasound finding or a clinical finding? Have you done the tumor markers mainly CA 125. If you have not done it please do it first. It is helpful in assessing if the cyst is cancer. The role of CT is mainly in detecting the spread of cancer ( metastasis). Thick and irregular cyst wall, existence of enhancing nodules on CT scan suggest cancer only if there is evidence of metastasis also. These cyst findings alone on CT are not diagnostic. Although pain and low grade fever can be there in cancer, it is also found in infection too. The findings of infection on CT scan are almost similar to the findings seen in cancer. MRI would be better than CT in assessing the ovarian cyst for evidence of cancer.
I hope this is helpful. If you have any further concerns do contact me through Healthcare Magic.
