Can Clozaril Be Taken During An Anaesthetic Procedure?
Hello!! I have a question about anesthesia. I need to get surgery on my foot to cut down a bump on a bone. The doctor said it’s going to be a fifty minute procedure, the anesthesia will be MAC or light general and I will be able to leave the hospital the same day. I take the medication clozaril for a sleep problem (even though it is normally prescribed for schizophrenia), and I was just wondering if it is dangerous to have MAC anesthesia or general anesthesia in combination with this medication. Will the anesthesiologist choose a certain anesthetic drug over others if they know I m taking clozaril? Will I need to stop taking it before the surgery or after? I am 41 years old, female, weigh 135 pounds, am 5’7, and clozaril (200 mg a day) is the only medication I take. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!
It is a concern due to the neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). It is a really bad interaction between neuroleptics like Clozaril and a lot of drugs some of which might use. Being off the Clozaril for a few days might be an option. Surgical anesthesia, however, commonly associated with psychotic breaks. I cannot say in your particular case, but generally, it might be a tricky situation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Matt Wachsman
