Can Cortisone Tablets Be Taken For Lupus During Pregnancy?
my daughter is 30 weeks pregnant and has lupis, she is having trouble with her legs and a lot of pain. She has been advised to take 4 cortisone tablets per day for a week and then to taper off over the next few weeks till she is back to the normal dose of 1 tablet per day. Can this harm the baby?
Cortisone is a type of medication called a corticosteroid which is commonly prescribed to treat a lot of inflammatory and immune conditions. These drugs are prescribed commonly during pregnancy, and are well known to be safe. I strongly recommend your daughter follow her doctor's advice about managing her lupus because the disease itself, if her antibody levels are high, can be risky for the pregnancy.
I hope this information was helpful and best of luck for your daughter's continuing pregnancy.
Sincerely, Dr. Brown
