Hi doctors, I'm in a relationship with someone with Crohn's disease. And i'm very concerned about the intimacy.. I need to know for sure if there is any medical evidence that states that there are risks of catching an infection from your patient partner.
Thanks.

Hi, Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease caused by multiple unknown factors, predominantly heredity and malfunction of immune system. There are multiple risk factors like family history and cigarette smoking. However, any sort of intimacy with the affected person cannot transmit Crohn's disease to other person. However, as a person in the relationship, you need to watch out for the complications your partner might suffer from like bowel obstruction, fistulas, malnutrition and colon cancer. You need to get routine investigations like colonoscopy or if required biopsy to improve the outcome. Proper diet and exercise will also reduce complications. Hope this helps. Any further queries, do ask again. Dr. Jyothi BL
