Can Diclofenac Be Taken To Reduce Swelling And Pain In Foot?

My husband is taking ramipril 10mg for blood pressure and recently bitten by a spider on his foot. After 2 lots of antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory, which was given without a repeat. His foot is starting to swell slightly around the big toe causing some pain. Can he take Diclofenac (Sandoz) EC 50 mgs instead as I have these at home?

Hello,

Swelling and pain at the base of the big toe is the commonest presentation of gout. If that is not the site where your husband was bitten, it would be worthwhile checking the blood for uric acid and have it treated. Diclofenac is a good anti-inflammatory medicine and will be helpful in reducing the pain and swelling. It can produce gastric irritation and so should be taken after food. If he suffers from burning abdominal pain, he should avoid diclofenac and take an anti-inflammatory medicine of the cox 2 inhibitor type.
If you have further query, I am available to answer.
Hope he gets well soon.
