Can Fluoxetine Be Discontinued To Avoid Severe Hair Loss And Be Replaced With Another Medicine?

I am taking fluoxetine and am having severe hair loss. Also taking Metoprolol, but believe the fluoxetine is causing the hair loss. Have tried twice to go without it and also tried Lexapro (which caused severe diarrhea). Was researching an alternative. So many questionable options!

Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

Reports exist stating Fluoxetine as a causative factor for hair loss, but only a few. The following measures are recommended to control hair loss:

1) Reducing the dose of Fluoxetine or the maximum effective dose can be achieved slowly over 4-6 weeks thus making body to acquaint with it. This has to be done only under the supervision of the prescribing psychiatrist.
2) Tab.Trichoton forte (biotin, calcium pantothenate, zinc, selenium, n-acetylcysteine) once daily for at least 8-12 weeks certainly helps in hair growth and also controls hair loss.
3) Stress is another important factor for hair loss. Mind relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, regular exercise, indulging in some sports would help manage your stress. Also make sure your hair is free of dandruff and any lice infestations.
4) Last but not the least is balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, trace elements; very less carbohydrates and fats.

Hope my answer is clear. Any other queries, please let me know. Its my pleasure to be of any help to you. Thank you for the query.

Take care

Regards,
