Can I Able To Breast Feed My Baby After Steroid Epidural Procedure For Sciatic Nerve Pain?
Hello, I am having very serious sciatic nerve pain. I have a severely herniated disc in my lower back, which is causing the pain. I am a surgical candidate but would prefer to try non-surgical treatments first and leaving surgery as a last resort. I am also 5 weeks post partum. I have stopped breastfeeding my baby temporarily while I am taking strong medications. One option that has been presented to me is a steroid epidural. Would I be able to resume breastfeeding my baby after the epidural procedure?
Hello, I have gone through your query and understood the concern. With a severe herniation of the disc, steroid injections may offer temporary relief by reducing the inflammatory edema pressing on the nerve roots. For traumatic herniation, this is likely to be of some help before proper treatment. For lumbar stenosis, the benefits are not so many. A laminectomy would be the best option. If you can feed the baby without exertion on the back as in lying posture, you can do so a couple of days after the procedure. Make sure you don't exert the lumbar spine. Please ask your doctor if you are fit for doing lumbar strengthening exercises for the time being. Hope you find this information useful. Take care.
