Can I Gradually Wean Off Keppra, Given That I Makes Me Feel Uncomfortable And Have Never Had Seizures Before?

I was put on keppra 500 one in the morning and one at night. I e never had a seizure but fainted at work after having a optical migraine but only for a few seconds. After being in the hospital for 3 days and everything coming back find. They think my wreck I was in when I was 19 which was 45 years ago has been causing the optical issues and so now they are calling them seizures. I don’t like how the keppra is making me feel and I have never fainted except once when I got over heated. Can I come off this medicine by taking a half at night and then half in the morning for a week and then maybe just a half once a day for a few days?

Hello,

Keppra with the active ingredient of Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy seizures. I think the episode of passing out is related to seizure problems you are facing rather than Keppra itself. So, if I was your caring doctor would investigate more on this.

To my judgment, you cannot come off this medicine on your own, or change dose without an appropriate evaluation of your caring neurologist. This is because instead of doing good, will make the things worse. So, definitely, you need a re-evaluation by your caring neurologist first, then, decide if you need to change the total therapy or the dose only.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
