Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can lactaid be taken after a food is eaten? My husband has been suffering with very bad cramps for 3 -4 hours now- we thinkit is because of having eaten an ice cream drumstik. This has not happened for several months but we think the cause is the ice cream. Will it do an harm for him to take 1-2 lactaid tablets now? Perhaps it will lessen the pain? Incidentally , he had 1/2 of his stomach removed in 2011 due to cancer and is still cancer free(last check-up was in July 2014)- these attacks only started after the operation.
Welcome to HCM Appreciate your concern for your husband. Though the recommended time to take lactaid is with the first bite or drink of a dairy product, there is no harm in taking it after food as it is an enzyme helping digestion of the milk sugar. If the pain is severe, he would be helped by an antispasmodic. Please check with your GP or pharmacist. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further queries. Wish your husband quick relief.
