Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking 125 mcg levothyroidoxin since 2008. I am 46 and over the past few years have noticed muscle fatigue my body aches all over. I thought this to be normal and take triflexion fish oil and d-3 all through GNC to help. I noticed that this can be a side effect relating to my thyroid. Should I see a thyroid specialists to possibly get off levo and try a natural way to treat my thyroid. At this rate I see myself being very crippled up due to these muscle aches. My tsh 1.75 YYYY@YYYY
Hello there, I can understand your concern. Levothyroxine is a thyroid hormone which is used when your own thyroid does not produce enough to keep TSH in normal levels. Levothyroxine when taken in the right doses according to weight and TSH levels do not produce side effects. It is quite a safe medicine used very commonly. If you stop levothyroxine your TSH levels will go up and infact make you hypothyroid which in itself has many complications like abnormal aches and pains, abnormal lipid profile etc. Your TSH at 1.75 is perfectly normal and your muscle pain does not seem to be due to levothyroxine or hypothyroidism. It would be advisable to get your Vit D and Serum Calcium levels, kidney functions, Liver functions tested and then meet your endocrinologist who can guide based on the reports. Till then do continue your levothyroxine. Hope this helps. Take care.
