My mother-in-law is 88 and has moderately severe Alzheimer s, lives in an assisted living. She is otherwise fairly healthy, recently developed edema (now takes HCTZ), has slightly elevated BP. She has had recurrent diarrhea for 10+ years, had some workups years ago, but no specific findings and see no point in pursuing it now. Our issue now is diarrhea daily but her caregivers are wary of using the rx Lomotil 2.5/0.025 4x/daily as needed, citing concerns about dependency. We want her comfortable and with no bowel distress, and are not concerned about long term consequences. Realistically, should we be concerned about long term/daily use of Lomotil? Is there a better option?
