Can Medrol And Hydrocortisone Be Taken At Different Timings?
I have coped and was recently diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency due to years of daily oral steroids. My endocrinologist took me off of 4 mg. daily medrol taken in morn and put me on 15 mg hydrocortisone at 8 am and 5 mg hydrocortisone at 4 pm. I suffered a lot of body pain so dr increased to 20 in morn and 10 in afternoon. I think medrol helped my breathing and inflammation from arthritis better than hydrocortisone. Can a patient take medrol in the morning, say 4 mg or less, and hydrocortisone in the afternoon? Thank you for your help. Also, can I decrease all these steroids over time without harming myself since I have long-term secondary adrenal insufficiency? I am 63 and have Cushing features.. and osteoporosis. my email address is YYYY@YYYY .
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Usually when a patient is under medrol there is no need to give hydrochortisone as medrol has a long half life and once a day is enough to substitute adrenal function. When there will not be necessary to take medrol anymore, than hydrochortisone should be started immediately.
