Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Metformin, Gabapentin, Glipizide And Valsartan Be Taken Together?
I recently started helping my 73 year old grandmother with her medication, she is prescribed 12 daily and 2 as needed. Listed as follows: METFORMIN GABAPENTIN LORAZEPAM CYCLOBENZAPRINE MECLIZINE FUROSEMIDE GLIPIZIDE LEVOTHYROXIN CITALOPRAM VALSARTAN LOVASTATIN PROMETHAZINE (as needed) CODEINE (as needed) I feel she is over medicated, I am her caretaker, but she refuses to let me accompany her at her doctors appointments to inquire why each is prescribed, she is not sure why she is taking them. My question is: can these pills all be taken together, are there any that should not be mixed. Thank you for any help you can give me.
Cyclobenzaprine and citalopram should not be used together. They both increase the levels of a chemical called serotonin and can cause a potentially life threatening reaction. Promethazine can also further increase these serotonin levels
Cyclobenzaprine and citalopram also both lengthen part of heart beat called the QT interval and this can also cause problems.
Cyclobenzaprine also decreases the levels of promethazine by at least 2 different mechanisms. Meclizine also decreases the levels of promethazine as well.
These are some possible interactions, there are a few more which are minor. It would be best for her doctor to review her meds and switch if possible.
I hope this helps
