Can Mucinex Cause Painful Lumps?

I have a lump that is painful as a I walk and or sit on it. It has been a problem since Monday this week. I am wondering if I need to get it checked out. The pain and size seems to be getting larger and more painful. I recently took Mucinex to help with a cold (not over the counter), just wondering if maybe I had an allergic reaction or what? I am a 24 year old male, 5 9 190 and do not have any history of such a thing happening.

Hi,

Mucinex contains guaifenesin which is used to relieve cough and to reduce chest congestion caused by common cold, flu, bronchitis or other breathing illness. Guaifenesin belongs to the group of medicines known as expectorants. It thins and loosens the mucus in the airways, in turn clearing congestion and making breathing easier. Side effects of Mucinex are a type of bumpy skin rash, angioedema, skin disorder with blistering and peeling, inflammation of the skin, hives, erythema or skin redness and swelling, symptoms of allergic reactions like redness, swelling or painful lumps, itching, rashes, swelling of lips, face, eyes, tongue, throat or hands etc., breathing difficulties, wheezing, dizziness etc. If such type of side effects persist for long or bother you, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
