Can Norethisterone Be Used If Mirena Coil Has Been Inserted?
I have irregular bleeding and I have the mirena coil. I need to go on pilgrimage and cannot be bleeding therefore I have the following questions: 1) can norethisterone be used if you have a mirena coil? 2) can the use of notethistone cause irregular bleeding, keeping in mind I have intermittent irregular bleeding now? 3) if I do not take norethisterone but start bleeding whilst on the pilgrimage, can I start taking norethisterone then and will it stop my periods? If yes, then how long would it take?
The Mirena coil contains the hormone progesterone, which after a prolonged period of time usually causes your menstrual cycle to become very light or stop completely.
Northisterone is just another type of progesterone, so it is unlikely to help you if you already have progesterone product that is not working to completely suppress your menstrual cycle.
However, stress on your body, such as the physical exertion of a pilgrimage, frequently results it missing irregular cycles even if you are not on any form of contraceptive.
So you may find that you do not have irregular bleeding during the pilgrimage even if you do not take the extra progesterone. If you do begin to bleed during the pilgrimage, taking the medication certainly will not cause you any harm but it may also not necessarily help.
I hope that that I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
