Can Nuedexta Be Taken During The Early Onset Of Alzheimer S?

My husband had two brain mRIs, brain scan, nerve test & blood work this past month for his short term memory issues. It was explained that he has stage 1, level 2 Alzheimer’s. Scan showed mild shrinkage in his temporal lobes. Dr prescribed off label drug neutexta. My husband does not have sudden outbursts, depression or pain. He’s a happy person. His attention span isn’t what it use to be. He still drives & is starting to get confused in his directions. He now uses his gps more often. I’m now afraid to give him this drug since he doesn’t have the anxiety & symptoms as described in this drug. I need a second opinion regarding this drug. Maybe he needs a DO instead of medication since there’s no cure.

I agree with you that giving medication in the absence of symptoms in an individual already exhibiting signs of a dementing illness is risky. I have a hard time sometimes even convincing colleagues of resisting the temptation to prescribe pills in such patients vs. taking more conservative approaches and recommending other interventions that would tend to more likely STIMULATE BRAIN FUNCTION.....which no pill can do. If one is having trouble with COGNITION (i.e. memory, logic, solving problems) then, one would best be served therapeutically by doing things directly related to stimulating the brain itself and PRACTICING skills that they once had but now find difficult. In my opinion and in my experience with treating patients this always tends to yield more long term results, at a cheaper cost, and with less risk for unwanted side effects. You and I share similar points of view when it comes to the use of drugs in dementing illnesses. However, there are certain situations when such medications may be helpful.....it doesn't necessarily sound as if this would be one of them....nevertheless, has your husband been fully worked up metabolically and chemically to make sure everything is in order in the bloodstream?
