Can Pradaxa Cause Bruising?

Missed a bottom step off foot stool. Shin red, hot to touch, black and blue around red. While taking a shower last night found bruising on foot. Pain to the top of shin. Have put on ice. Have A-fib use Pradaxa and other meds for the A- fib. Age:62. This happened 8 days ago. Doesn t seem to get better. Is all bruising due to Pradaxa?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Pradaxa (Dabigatran), an oral anticoagulant given in a case of atrial fibrillation can increase bleeding tendency on minor trauma, particularly in elderly who are otherwise prone to easy bruising due to thinning of epidermis and flattening of dermo-epidermal junction making separation of layers easier. Hypovitaminosis C/'Bachelor scurvy' in the elderly could be contributing an additional factor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Tushar Kanti Biswas, Internal Medicine Specialist
