Finished one-week regimen of refaximin approx 10 days ago for gastro bacterial overgrowth. 50% effective. Had root canal today. Directed to take amoxicillin if I experience pain or swelling. Question: Could refaximin be substituted for amoxicillin? As an preventative of oral infection? In short, kill two birds with one stone?

Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query.Rifaximin can't be substituted for Amoxicillin. Rifaximin has poor oral bioavailability, only minute amount of drug goes to blood stream so it won't cure your tooth infections or prevent it.Amoxicillin is a drug of choice in oral infection and prevention of it but it can again cause gastrobacterial overgrowth. For that you should take probiotics.I usually advise probiotics like saccharomyces boulardi for this.Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
