Can Simvastatin Be Cut Into Half Before Intake?

Can you cut simvastatin in half without causing problems with the meds such as if they are time released? I have 40mg & have not been taking any as I wanted to get off statins. I would like to start with only 20 mg, but would need to cut them in half. Is there any problem with taking them once they have been cut in half?

Thanks for contacting HCM

You are wondering if you can split simvastatin tablets. the answer is yes. In my practice I frequently give my patients a high dose and instruct them to cut the tablets in half to help reduce the cost of the medication. Cutting the pill dose not alter its absorption or metabolism.

If you are trying to reduce your statin use in addition to reducing your dose I recommend low fat diet, regular exercise and losing weight if you are overweight.
