Can UTI Cause Radiating Pain In The Legs And Bottom As An Early Symptom Before Bladder Symptoms Appear?

Can a UTI cause pain on the bottom/legs radiating downwards? It seems like this is a common early symptom for me prior to feeling UTI symptoms in the bladder (I get them frequently) - it will start with a radiating pain that includes the back of my thighs, bottom, and sometimes even all the way down to the bottom of my foot. My UTIs respond well to treatment and the leg pain goes away once the infection has cleared.

Hello,

Maintain hygiene, take bath regularly and keep yourself well hydrated. Avoid using dirty washrooms, do not use public washrooms. Get yourself and your spouse / partners urinalysis (C/S and R/E) done. If UTI is detected in your partner, then both you and your partner need to get treated to avoid recurrence. Ideally UTI presents with symptoms like lower abdominal pain, burning urination, frequent urination.

The symptom of pain radiating to the legs may be due to dehydration, imbalance in sodium-potassium level, muscle tension or inflammation. Keep yourself well hydrated. Take water and fluids to avoid dehydration and thus muscle cramps and pain leg. Radiating pain to the bottom and down to the back, legs and foot may be indicative of symptoms of sciatica. Get clinically examined by a GP / neurologist. Get required, NCV tests and imaging tests done to detect the cause of the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
