I ve shingle, be taking Valacyclovir for 5 days. ( I m 72 years old and had shingle shot several years ago.) The blister is getting dry, but the pills apparently makes me very sleepy. Can I stop taking the Valacyclovir, & I ll call my doctor tomorrow. Thanks Google online doctor. Judy Chen
valacyclovir does not usually cause drowsiness. Drowsiness has been reported but it's not very common. Depending on the site of involvement shingles may cause encephalitis, which causes drowsiness.
You should consult your doctor as soon as possible for clinical assessment and appropriate testing. Your doctor will have to distinguish between the side effect and the complication. I would recommend continuing the treatment until then.
