Can Wellbutrin And Brintellix Be Take Together?

I have been recently switched from Effexor xr 150mg. to Brintellix 10mg. My doc. had me go straight frm oe to the other claiming there would be no withdrawal effects. Well of course there were and although I m feeling no better as far as depression and anxiety are concerned...I would not expect that yet...my withdrawal from Effexor is not as bad though I m still plenty sick. I was on Effexor 150 with Wellbutrin 300 for a good number of years. My concern is that now I m reading where Wellbutrin and Brintellix should not be taken together. Doc did not stop nor taper my W and I m wondering if there is a drug interaction at least partially responsible for me being so sick!! Don t know what to do

Hi & Welcome.

If taken together (Wellbutrin & Brintellix) a harmful interaction can occur hence should be avoided.

Brintellix (Vortioxetine) is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI used in the treatment of anxiety and depression.

If taken together along with Wellbutrin (Bupropion), it may increase the blood levels and effects of Brintellix resulting in a rare but serious condition called the "Serotonin syndrome", which is characterized by hallucination, seizures, extremely high BP, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, blurred vision, severe muscle stiffness, tremor, in coordination, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. It may also in coma and even death in severe cases.

In view of the above I advise you to consult your treating doctor to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
