Can A Long Session Of Calorie Restricted Diet, Running And Lifting Weights Cause Severe Hair Loss?
I'm a 38 year old woman who is suddenly shedding many hairs when washing my hair or applying leave in conditioners post shower. I have recently come off a long (2 or 3 years p) of a calorie restricted jet... 1000- 1400 daily (I'm 5'9) while running and or lifting weights as well. I began slowly increasing my calorie intake about a month ago... Could the calorie restriction be the cause? But then why didn't my hair shed so badly during the restriction? Help!!
It is definitely possible that the caloric restriction would have contributed to your hair loss.
There is a condition called telogen efflluvium which is characterised by thinning or shedding of the hair due to early entry in to the telogen phase (resting phase of the hair follicle). This condition can occur in different conditions, one of these is very low calorie diets.
The hair loss and shedding should resolve on its own in a few months.
I hope this helps
