Can A Spleen Appear To Be Normal But Be Dysfunctioning?

My husband has low white and red blood cell counts and also low platelet count. He has had a bone marrow biopsy and everything was normal. An ultrasound indicated a fatty liver, but the spleen appeared to be of normal size. His hematologist is unsure what is causing his problem. Can a spleen appear to be normal, but not functioning normal? We've been working on this problem for almost 6 months and still don't have a definite answer.

Hi,

Your husband may be suffering from pancytopenia with normal bone marrow causes are:
1. Paraneoplastic syndromes.
2. Chronic myeloid leukemia.
3. Megaloblastic anemia. etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Viral Infections like hepatitis or parvovirus B19 infection may present like this.

Please consult your hematologist, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
