Can Acid Reflux Lead To Spasms In Esophagus? Will Aciphex Cure Heart Burns And Cough?

Am taking aciphex ( actually the generic form), can reflux effect swallowing?
At times I have had spasms of the esophagus and it was determined after visits to ER that nitroclycerin tabs. did relieve the spasm. I don't have heartburn, but I do have the cough associated with reflux--usually while sitting. I am a senior citizen and my stomach muscles do not give the stomach the support they once did. Also spinal problems because of osteo penia and osteo arthritis prevent the posture from what it should be. I am not overweight and according to recent tests, no heart trouble, diabetes, kidney or other problems . The doctors say I'm in good health.

Do you have any suggestions about the repeated cough? It is not a cold. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Toya A. Harvey

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
I would come up with these measures and reasons for these symptoms , these includes.
1 The first possibility is of peptic ulcer disease or hiatus hernia .Diagnosis can be confirmed by upper G I endoscopy.
Now take these measure for relief.Try raising the head of your bed about 4 inches with blocks. It also might help to avoid eating or drinking for 2 hours before you lie down.To help control stomach acid one should not drink alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them or eat chocolates or spicy or greasy foods. Also take some antacid but if symptoms are sever then you may need drugs like proton pump inhibitors.
2 Cough may be due to some allergic disorder.Avoid mite , dust , hay , sudden fall and rise of temperature , pollen , mold.
You may need antihistamine + bronchodilators .
3 Reflux directly don't causes difficulty in swallowing but indirectly patient feel that something is stuck in throat .So take measures as above mentioned.
In my opinion consult a physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.
