Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 41 years old and in very good health other than anemia. I exercise every day but have struggled with the anemia for quite sometime. Recently got a procedure done to reduce the amount of blood loss from my periods. I was at the doctor today because I feel like I have been having chest pains and/or panic attack. I am now on Mirena for past 6 months. In short, found out I have a heart murmur. The doctor did an EKG in the office and blood work to check anemia, thyroid and vitamin D. This heart murmur is scaring the hell out of me as I never knew I had it. I drink EXCESSIVE amounts of coffee and I am going to stop that. I am worried that this heart murmur could be something major. I am scheduled for echo next week. Any words of wisdom? Can someone with anemia have a heart murmur?
Dear Madam Thanks for your query. A heart murmur can occur purely because of anemia and will resolve after recovery from anemia. If there are no other signs of heart disease, the likelihood of murmur due to anemia are high. Be assured that anemia can be the sole cause for heart murmur. Get your ECHO done in a relaxed manner and discuss with your doctor if you have any other symptoms. Sincerely Sukhvinder
