Can An Elderly Patient Use Polycarbophil As A Laxative?
It explains that pocketbook works as a laxitive, but does it also combat diarhea? I have used EQUALACTIN for that purpose in the pastsuccessfully. My 92yr old mother has shares today and will she be able to use this or does she need a different OTC? I meant polycarbophil

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Pilycarbophyl is a bulk forming laxative and so should be avoided unless she is under regular care and advice of an expert physician. It is better to avoid to combat side effects of the medicine. In spite of that, she can take Duphaston liquid with water at bed time. Dose is to be adjusted by her doctor. Let her eat fibers and have ample of water in her diet. She can do light abdominal exercises in sitting or sleeping positions.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
