Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 93 years old and besides other medications I take one and a half digoxin pills every morning. If my heart rate os too high I am to take an additional pill. The other morning I had a heart rate of 136 so took the extra pill, within minutes my heart rate dropped to 40. I called the ambulance annd they felt it was perhaps the extra digoxin that caused the drop. I have been taking extra pills if necessary for over a year and this has never happened before. Could it be too much digoxin causing the promlem? I am 156 pounds and about 5foot four inheight. I have atrial fib, heart failure, high blood pressure and lung fibrisis and diabetes .
I have gone through the medical details provided by you and I would like to tell you that DIGOXIN is a very effective drug for controlling heart rate (especially resting heart rate) in Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure.
Yes your drop in heart rate could very well be due to an increase intake of Digoxin. Also above that it's not advisable to take the medicine according to your wish as it can lead to serious Digoxin toxicity also.
So do consult personally your treating doctor before changing the drug dose.
I wish you good health
