Can An Illeostomy Cause White Colour Spongy Stool?
I had an illeostomy end of Feb. this year. Now my stomach at the stoma site and surrounding area are somewhat tender and sore and also somewhat distended. I am also occasionally passing white spongy objects that kind of resemble a large oblong type pill. Can you tell me what's my problem is?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Iliostomy means the small intestine is opened up surgically as there might have been distal obstruction or disease. The passage of the stool through iliostomy does not allow all the digestive enzymes to work on the foods and hence cause cause excoriation of the skin and subcutaneous tissues and secondary infection. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult your Doctor or the Surgeon to have clinical evaluation, examination and investigations if any. get started on a course of an antibiotic and supportive medications along with probiotics. Also apply local ointments to avoid further skin excoriation. Look for proper fitment of the iliostomy bag. Avoid foods that are difficult to digest or cause loose stools.
