Can Bipolar Disorder Make One Fall Asleep Standing?

Does falling asleep while standing up have anything to do with bipolar disorder. I'm asking about my husband he is 34 and has been diagnosed along time ago with bipolar his says he has so much on his mind he can't get in the bed but will fall asleep standing up and sometimes fall and get hurt. I was just wondering if this was normal with bipolar or if there is another problem?

Hello and thanks for writing in.

I understand that you are concerned about your husband's problem of falling asleep while standing. Now, this is not a symptom or feature of Bipolar disorder.

Sudden onset of sleep attacks leading to a person falling down when standing can be due to other causes like Narcoloepsy. Also, the possibility of a seizure should also be considered. So, I would suggest that you report this problem to his treating doctor so that your husband can have a detailed evaluation to find out that the cause of this problem is.
