HI
Cavities or dental decay are caused by microbes like streptococcus mutans, which are having potential in some patient to cause heart problems like sub acute bacterial endocarditis (SABE). this in part is also caused by a huge number of microbes which are seen in patients having gum problems. As, more the bad oral hygeine or dental decay more will be the number of scuh microbes in your body.

BUT, the chances of getting heart disease because of dental problem, is most of the time SIGNIFICANT ONLY for the patient who are already having any pre-existing heart aliment like recent angioplasty/ rheumatic heart diseases, valve replacements, bypass surgeries, Mitral Valve Prolapse to name a few in addition with, uncontrolled sugar levels as in Diabetics.

In a HEALTHY PATIENT, with all parameters in contorl, there is NOT ANY DIRECT ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CAVITIES AND HEART PROBLEMS. in other words, we can say, it is only Statistically significant for the patient, already having any such problem....

Lastly, Getting rid of cavities or gum problem, by the way is better for overall health being. so you can get them treated, for better things rather than becuase of fearing heart problems.

hello
cavities definately can lead to subacute bacterial endocarditis BUT only if the cavity is so deep that it involves the pulp
saying that i mean that if your pulp that is the vital tissue inside your tooth is infected with micro organism (mostly strep. mutans ) than these may reach your heart through blood supply route and hence the problem
however if its intial caries theres no such risk , but why wait for the risk to enhance
so i would advise that you get your cavities filled
hope that helps

Yes and no... The mouth is a pretty dirty place, it is full of bacteria feasting on all the left over food. These bacteria can enter your blood stream through a cut in your mouth. Once in the blood stream they can easily travel to your heart; setting up shop on your heart valves, or pericardium (the outside lining sac of the heart). This type infection while is most common with intravenous drug users it could theoretically reach the heart by gaining entry to the circulatory system through any opening in the skin. So why yes it is possible to get a cardiac infection by not brushing your teeth, it is however quite unlikely
