Hi,I am Dr. Joan F. Tryzelaar (Cardiac Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Coconut Water Be Given Instead Of Klor-con M20?
My husband is recovering from surgery for a thoracic aortic aneurysm dissection and rupture (it bled into the pericardium and sealed itself off) and aortic valve replacement (his valve was bicuspid, which was the biggest contributor to the aneurysm). One of the medications he s on is Klor-Con M20, to offset the diuretic Furosemide (40 mg). He would like to get off as many drugs as he can as quickly as he can. Could he drink coconut water (450 mg K per half cup) instead of taking Klor-Con as long as he s taking the diuretic? (I can t seem to find online how to convert mEq to mg.) Thank you very much!
There's no easy way to do this. With patients on low dose of a diuretic we often recommend to increase the intake of tomatos and bananas - coconut water can be helpful as well.

For your reference: 10 mEq of Klor-Con , which is potassium chloride, contains between 600-750 mg of potassium chloride. Please see your provider for more advise and follow up labs to make sure the potassium level remains with in range.
