Can Contractions Be Induced At 38 Weeks Of Pregnancy?
I m almost 38weeks this week Im a little over 5cm dilated but yet my water has to break and my contractions have stopped so the doctor has sent me home again for the third time in three days. Due to the fact of me not being 39weeks she says she cant induce me. What needs to happened for them to keep me and what happends if I keep dilating without my water breaking will they have to induce me then?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, The labor pains can be induced when baby is fully matured, her weight is good. Generally, when there is no other indication for early induction( leaking, maternal high blood pressure, fetal distress) induction is not done before 39 weeks- which is a stage when baby is fully mature, with average birth weight.) In your case you had mild labor pains twice, which did not increase-so they might be just false labor pains. at the same time baby might not be grown up to the mark. In such condition, managing a weak baby after hasty induction, is difficult than nourishing it in mother's womb. So when to induce should be treating doctor's choice/responsibility. Please follow the advice given. Thanks.
