Can Dental Procedure Be Done When On Coumadin?

Hi, I have 2 mechanical valves, on Coumadin for more than 10 years, I may need some dental work ( root removal and filling), my cardiologist told me that I may need to be admitted to hospital because they have to stop Coumadin during the dental work and inject me with Heparin.
I want to know do I really need to be admitted to hospital and why.

First of all get an INR test done before any extraction, normal values shoudnt be a problem and tooth fillings can be definetly done.
