Hi I’ve been experiencing derealization for a few months now, alcohol used to make it go away but I quit drinking cause I don’t want to be dependent on alcohol and beat this the right way. Can derealization last forever? Does it ever fully go away

Hello,

You are suffering from derealization for a few months now. Avoid taking alcohol, gradually taper it as it is not very helpful. No, derealization does not last forever. Though some may find it difficult to get out of it. There may not be any cure for this, but treatment can reduce distressing symptoms and even lead to full remission of the disorder. Genetic and environmental factors, high levels of stress and fear cause symptoms of derealization.

Other factors that may be responsible for such symptoms are childhood trauma or other experiences or events that cause severe emotional stress or trauma. Treatment includes a combination of psychotherapy and medication given for symptomatic relieve. Talk therapy is the main treatment for depersonalization-derealization disorder. You are advised to get connected to a Physical therapist. You will get help from cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

Sleep deprivation is a factor that may also contribute to de-realization. Take quality sleep of at least 8 hours at night. Ground yourself in reality for example, by playing loud music, or holding something very cold. You will have to remain connected with the physical therapist and psychologist till you are better.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
