Can Dexamphetamine Be Taken For ADHD Along With Marijuana?
My son was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and still experiences it as an adult (21 yrs). He smokes marijuana heavily as he says it helps his mind to stay focused and unjumbled. He is thinking about going back onto the medication he had as a child for ADHD (dexamphetamine). Is there any harm in taking this drug if he continues to smoke marijuana?
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
I understand that you are concerned about your son taking ADHD medicatione along with Marijuana. There is a possibility for adverse interactions between Marijuana and ADHD medication and there is also a likelihood that drugs like Marijuana can decrease the efficacy of the prescription medication.
So, it would be advisabe to stop taking Marijuana when he is on treatment with ADHD medication. Also, if he needs to be put on medication for his ADHD symptoms, then he needs a detailed evaluation by a psychiatrist because only certain medication are liscenced for use in adults with ADHD. So, I would suggest that you take him to a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation and further treatment.
Wish you all the best.
