Can Diabetics Medication Cause Stomach Ache, Shaking And Loss Of Appetite?
my husband was just diagnosed with diabetics and I think the medication is making him sick...he s been on metformin 500mg since 7/14 and since yesterday has been complaining of a stomache ache and his hands have been shaking his breathing is heavy only wants to sleep and is not eating called the clinic who prescribed meds and they want to see him..besides being weak, .he doesn t not want to go...what can I do for him....most of the week his blood levels were good have been between 100-135
Dear Madam, Metformin is a very good tablet for diabetes. Like all other good things this good tablet also had a side effect of gastritis which causes stomach ache. This can be overcome by taking metformin after food. if there is no relief a short course of antacids will help. Now the second part of his symptoms can be due to low sugar. Although theoretically metformin should not cause low sugars but our patients do complain of typical low sugars owing to their good diet and exercise regimen. The best treatment for your husband would be to check blood sugars when he is feeling very drowsy/sick. give him something to eat if sugars are very low. You can take him to clinic for dose adjustment of metformin. Since he is a young diabetic there is always scope for managing diabetes with just diet and exercise.. wishing him the very best..
