My boyfriend performed oral sex on me about a week ago while he had a cold sore. About two days later I developed a sore on my vagina. I now have multiple sores around my vagina that appear to be herpes. Can herpes spread through that type of contact? And if so am I now contagious? Will I break out in genital herpes often?
Hello there. Yes Herpes can spread from the type of contact you described. It is most likely that you have Herpes infection around your vagina as you rightly suspect. Yes you are currently contagious. If treated early & adequately with systemic/oral acyclovir or other antiviral derivatives, you can limit the disease. As for recurrent episodes, it may happen each time the body's immunity is compromised. So the trick would be to stay happy & ensure the immunity is optimum & don't worry about it. Please practice safe sex & more so when these eruptions occur, the viral load is high & hence use of a condom highly advocated. Also advocated during sex in the disease free interval by some schools of thought to keep the viral load down. Please do a Herpes Simplex IgG/IgM test that will differentiate between recent & /or old infection & give you titres' so you can monitor treatment efficacy. Please visit a dermatologist/venereologist nearest you for prompt treatment. Good Luck. Dr Praveen Rodrigues MD
