Can I Take Prednisone And Coumadin Together?

I take 7.5mg. of Coumadin daily. Have been prescribed Prednisone 10mg for short term use to resolve gout in my right big toe. The prescribed dosages are 4 tabs. for 3 days, then 3 tabs. for 3 days, then 2 tabs. for 3 days, 1 tab. for 3 days and the discontinue the Prednisone. I informed the anticoagulant clinic of this short term usage of using these two meds.. I was told to have my INR done to determine the possible increase or decrease in my INR. I will be taking the 4 tabs. today for the 3rd day and then on to the rest of the suggested usage as prescribed. Can the interaction of these two meds., for short term, be of any great concern?

Yes, there's a slight interaction between these drugs (Prednisone and Coumadin). Both increased anticoagulant dosage requirements as well as bleeding and increased anticoagulant sensitivity have been reported during concomitant corticosteroid therapy. See your doctor promptly if you have any unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness. You could also experience blood clots. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor. Hope this answers your question.
