Can Increase In Blood Pressure Medication Cause Tightness In Throat And Chest?

I was just told by my doctor that we needed to increase my high blood pressure medicine from 25 miligrams to 50 miligrams.Last night was the first night I did this. Today I felt a tightness in my throat and chest when I woke up. Is this normal for the first day after increasing my meds?

Certain medicines given for hypertension can cause constriction of throat and chest. They are: tablet atenolol, propronol, metoprolol, etc., which belong to a group of drugs called beta receptor blocking drugs. When the dose is increased these drugs may produce tightness in the chest. If you are using beta receptor blocking drugs it is better not to increase the dose but some other anti hypertensive drug may be added. If you are suffering from asthma it is better to completely avoid beta receptor blocking drugs as they worsen asthma.
