Hi. I saw my gyn today for large fibroids. I have been having horrible back pain. He checked my urine to see if I had an infection. No infection, but said there were a large # of ketones. I am not diabetic. Asked what could cause this and he said I was starving myself. Not true. I am 5 7 and weigh about 179. I have lost 6 lbs in 2 months, but definately not starving in any way. I have 3 questions; could these ketones be causing back pain? And what is causing the ketones? Also, do I need any further testing for this? He didn t order any tests for me. Thank you for your time.
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Ketones are present in urine either in diabetes or starvation, as your doctor told you. If you were not starved or hungry for a long time before urine examination, then the starvation is ruled out. I will suggest you to get a oral glucose tolerance test to look for any glucose intolerance and diabetes, and get appropriate treatment timely. Presence of ketones in the urine do not cause back pain. Hope you found the answer helpful. Regards Dr Deepti Verma OBGYN
