Hellow Doctor this is Murali from ooty, India .It is about health problem of my mother in law.She is of 66 years old. Her legs were inactive for last 10 years, all of sudden she was not able to walk and she walks with some support by dragging her legs. she is very active all the time. She is healthy, she eats normally. We have checked with doctors but they couldn't diagnose the problem. They say because of lack of Calcium made her leg bones inactive. I am confused , I need a medical advice, please.
Thank you for your question. I am Dr Asanghanwa Carlson. Women in old age tend to have problems with calcium due to hormonal imbalances which come with menopause. In this case Calcium is reabsorbed from bones into blood making the bones weak and fragile and prone to fractures. This can be manifested by joint pains, waist pains, cramps and difficulties walking. However difficulties in walking are not only caused by calcium deficiency in old age, other causes in her situation might be sciatic nerve compression and lomboarthritis. I would advise you visit a rhumatologist or an orthopaedist with her for X rays of her vertebral column and pelvis and her limbs and other blood tests and proper management. In the meantime she could take Calcium tablets, one tablet twice daily. I wish her a quick recovery
