Can Limbic Encephalitis Be Treated?
My German stepmother has been in the hospital for the past 2 weeks with a neurologist conducting multiple tests on her. His first diagnosis was autoimmune limbic encephalopathy, but with the IVip, IV treatment she has not improved. Because 2 German cousins died of crezchfeldt-Jacob Disease in their 60's, the neurologist now suspects she either inherited it or may have contracted it during WWII (the Nazis left many villages bare of food and many in Europe starved to death) and it has been dormant until now.
In 2014 in England there was an outbreak of mad cow disease and she was in Germany in 2014 & back in 2015. I know it is very rare with only 5 people reported dying of it to date in the US.
QUESTION: Is there any other diagnosis you know of that it could possibly be and we could try to treat her with, or is she doomed and not treatable and going to die? Thank you, Nancy Gribble, Nurse in Georgia

In case of encephalopathy prognosis is always bad, if patient has lost the consciousness certain test are there which confirmed the encephalopathy then it is nothing to think about the differential diagnosis unless patient is conscious, responds to verbal commands, else nothing much can be done.
