Can Long-term Intake Of Valacyclovir-HCL Cause Memory Loss?

Hi, I have been taking Valacyclovir Hcl tabs for five or more years. I was put on the medication because of outbreaks, very painful, caused from chicken pox. I am now 84 with a few memory problems and wondering if this med would cause this kind of problem.shirley

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Valacyclovir is an antiviral medicine used to treat herpes virus infections. It may cause concentration problems or drowsiness. But Valacyclovir long time use does not cause memory problems. If you are having memory issues it is highly likely not a side effect of Valacyclovir.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Malik Amonov MD
