Can Meftal P Be Administered To 1 Year Old Instead Of Mefanorm?
Hi doctor, My child is 1 yr 1 month old. She is running on high temp. 102 to 102.5°F from past 30 hrs with temp. coming down for just a couple of hrs after administering ~1.2ml of dolopar drops every 5-6 he s. Doctor advised me to give her mefnorm. I have meftal P at home & not mefanorm. Is it fine to give meftal P instead of mefanorm ? Thanks Vanika
Yes, Meftal-P can be given instead of Mefanorm. Both Meftal-P and Mefanorm contain Mefenamic acid which is effective in lowering the raised body temperature or fever. Its most common side effects include gastritis, abdominal discomfort, bleeding. Hence, it should not given on empty stomach and the duration of treatment should not be long. However, Dolopar (Paracetamol) is the safest drug to reduce the raised body temperature in young children.
If the fever does not subside even after taking Dolopar then Mefanorm can be given. It can be given every 6-8 hours interval. Along with the medication tepid sponging should be done to lower the raised body temperature. He should be encouraged to take plenty of oral fluids and fruit juices. The most common cause of fever in this age is infection. So, he should be properly examined by a doctor and appropriate antibiotic should be prescribed to treat the underlying cause.
Hope the advice given above would be useful. Let me know if I can assist you further. A feed back is appreciated.
